Welcome to Cassplay!

Did you know the first “cosplay” was done in 1939? The first ever sci-fi convention was the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon for short) in New York in 1939.  While cosplay has become mainstream it has a long history.  Even the term “cosplay” has been around longer than you think.

With that in mind, I’m sure you’re wondering who I am and why I gave you some facts about cosplay.

Hi, I’m Cassplay otherwise known as Cassandra, if that’s too long just call me Cassie.  I’m a cosplayer and sometimes a photographer.  Over my 9 years in cosplay, I’ve gone to many conventions, the main one I religiously go to is Anime North.

Through those years, I’ve seen a lot of cosplays, met a lot of people and seen the hidden gems each convention has.  I’ve learned the ups and downs of preparing for a convention.  The quick fix hacks for when something breaks and the joy at having a prop on its last legs survive that ONE photoshoot you needed it to.

Forrest J. Ackerman in his “futuristicostume” in 1939.

Conventions now are bigger than when they started.  The first cosplay ever known was at Worldcon done by Forrest J. Ackerman who had made a “futuristicostume” based on the 1936 film Things to Come.

His costume sparked the start of cosplay which was noticed overseas.  Fast forwarding to 1984, Japanese reporter and manga publisher Takahashi Nobuyuki hears of Worldcon and attends.  Impressed by the costumes he had seen he flies back to Japan to write about it to his readers.  It is there that he combined the words costume and play into kosupure which we know today as cosplay.

I hope you’ll join me on this journey of unique facts about cosplay and conventions.  It’s going to be…fantastic.
